Homework: The purpose of homework is to reinforce the skills the children learn during their school day. In first and second grade, homework should take about 40 - 50 minutes which includes at least 10 minutes of reading. If homework takes longer than this and if your child is having a tough time please stop and write me a note. I will not usually issue a homework ticket in this case. I don't want your child to become discouraged and will provide extra help in this area. Generally, the children receive one page of math, one page of language arts, and one page of spelling. The 10 minutes of reading is the most important – some parents find it easier to do this first. First Grade homework is most effective when the parents check the work upon completion. Correcting the mistakes together is a good learning tool. If your child misses school, I will usually not send homework home unless his/her absence is for an extended period.
